The Prophet

On Friendship

· 2 min read

And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship.

And he answered, saying:

Your friend is your needs answered.

He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.

And he is your board and your fireside.

For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.

Your friend is your needs answered.

When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the “nay” in your own mind, nor do you withhold the “ay.”

And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;

For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.

When you part from your friend, you grieve not;

For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.

And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.

For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.

And let your best be for your friend.

If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.

For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?

Seek him always with hours to live.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.

And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

A friend is your needs answered: a field sown with love and reaped with thanksgiving, a board and a fireside where hunger is fed and peace is found. Gibran teaches that true friendship lets both the yes and the no be spoken freely, and that in its silences heart goes on listening to heart, so that thoughts and desires are born and shared without words. Parting brings no grief, for what is loved most in a friend shows more clearly in his absence, as a mountain shows more clearly from the plain. Friendship has no purpose but the deepening of the spirit. Love that seeks any gain is a net that catches only what is worthless. Give your friend your best, your flood as well as your ebb. Seek him with hours to live, never with hours to kill, for he is there to fill your need and not your emptiness. Gibran closes in lightness: laughter and shared pleasures belong to friendship, because the heart finds its morning in the dew of little things.

Key ideas

  • Friendship is nourishment and rest: the friend is field, board and fireside to the soul.
  • Between true friends both agreement and refusal are spoken without fear, and silence is itself a communion.
  • Absence clarifies love, as distance shows the whole mountain to the climber.
  • Friendship that seeks profit stops being love; its only purpose is the deepening of the spirit.
  • Bring your friend your fullness as well as your lack: hours to live, not hours to kill.
  • A friend can answer your need but cannot fill your emptiness.
  • Laughter and small shared pleasures renew the heart like morning dew.
