In 1908 a book appeared in Chicago bearing no author's name, only the title "Three Initiates." It was The Kybalion, and it claimed to set down at last the aphorisms of a Hermetic teaching passed for centuries from mouth to ear. Behind the veil stood, almost certainly, William Walker Atkinson, the great workhorse of New Thought who wrote under a dozen names. But the anonymity was the point. By refusing to sign their work, the Initiates set the teaching above the teacher, and offered the Seven Hermetic Principles not as doctrine to be believed but as keys to be tried. The result was a small book of unusual reach, a doorway through which countless students first stepped into Hermetic philosophy.
